And they are usuallyreproduced indefinitely by new teeth growing at the side of thebase or below them. More usually theyare pointed and curved; sometimes theyare flattened, with sharp cutting edgesin front and behind in the more strictlycarnivorous reptiles; in those of her-bivorous habits they are more dilatedand roughened on the crown, notpointed; in not a few they are low,broad, and flat and are used only forcrushing the hard shells of invertebrates.With the very few exceptions amongcertain dinosaurs, they never have morethan one root for attachment. Theevolutional tendency for reptiles, as forthe mammals, is to loose teeth, especiallythose of the palate. Among living rep-tiles it is only the most primitive types,such as the lizards, snakes, and thetuatera, which have teeth on the palatalbones, and in none are there teeth onthe vomers, as was the rule in the ancientreptiles.
