kingas we understood it, and one of us was masterof this art as he was a master of camp life in allits details and as he was a master of the art oflife generally in all of its relations. At first weagreed to take turns cooking and I had thoughts 33 of becoming an accomplished cook. Gradually, however, by mutual consent, MacLaren tookthese duties over entirely, much to the generaladvantage, and I performed all the other workof the camp, including washing up the dishes. To meet the opposing cur-rent of the Kantishna, which we were to ascend,we must resort to the poles. There were plentyof slender spruce trees on the bank, some of themso withered and dry that we had no difficultyin finding two that were suitable for poles. Withthese we were able to push the canoe againstthe swift current, and at 8.30 we pulled up againsta sandy bar on the island that at that pointdivided the stream, and there made camp. Her
