In the fourteenth century there was a castle here,of which the site at least retains the name. Formany years this palace of vast proportions has been thehospitable autumnal residence of the great family ofAdda, and from one improvement to another the Villaof Montagnola, from the time of the Count AbbeFernando of Adda in 1808 up to the present time,has been considered one of the most sumptuous countryresidences of Lombardy. It retains its characteristictype of the rich Lombardy villas of 1600. Althoughthe greater number of these villas were constructed inthe plain, adorned with formal parks after the Italianfashion, with many plants, paths, and symmetricaldecoration, the Villa Arcore, while maintaining ingeneral its original construction, has the advantage(242)

AND COUNTRY SEATS of being situated on a rather high elevation, surroundedby an enormous and beautiful park, left rather inwooded English freedom. There is, however, on theterrace overlooking the broad green expanse of lawna very charming formal garden, which was executedunder the direction of Balzaretti, about 1841-42. Thechapel was erected by Giovanni d Adda in memoryof his young wife, whose beautiful tomb is the workof the well-known sculptors Vicenzo and Lorenzo Vela.The building recalls the celebrated baptistery of theChurch of San Satiro in Milan. The arrangement ofthe very large salon in the centre of the house is aparticularly fortunate one, and permits of most beauti-ful views from all sides of the surrounding country.
