NovENTA Padovana, OctobcrMy dear M: Any time is never, therefore this morning, Idevoted to taking careful photographs of this villaand the grounds, which are really superb. SignoraForti went with me to give the gardeners any direc-tions that might help me, and this afternoon we allwent over to Frassanelle to see Countess Papafava,where we had tea, and saw one of the most lovely parksin the whole Veneto. There seem to be no two villasalike, and yet each one has its peculiar charm andattraction. Here, as is so often the case, the averagetraveller would never dream of the beautiful placebeyond the simple park gates on the highway, and Ithink the distance from the gate to the villa must be(170)

AND COUNTRY SEATS fully two kilometres, through a wooded park thatreminded me very much of our own at home. Weclimbed and climbed, turned and turned again, andwhen at last we drew up before the villa, one of themost magnificent views in the Venetia lay stretchedbefore us. The Italian women have drunk at the fountain ofeternal youth, and it was indeed difficult to believethat the young and pretty Countess Papafava was themother of the tall young girl who came out with herto greet us, for she looked much more like an oldersister. The head of the house, now an old gentleman,offered to show us about the whole park, which he hashad laid out under his personal direction. At first we went on in the car to the top of whatthey call a hill, but what we should call a mountain,back of the villa, to get a more complete view of thesurrounding country. After tea we strolled about thegrounds, and Theodoli and Countess Lazzara took arow on the beautiful lake that forms one of the chiefattractions of t
