here for a few days on a visit. Afterthe service Her Majesty spoke to me most graciously,and asked me to come to the castle this afternoon,where we have been, and where I have taken a num-ber of photographs — a rare privilege, so the Marchesadi Villamarina assured me. Del Grillo was just asnice as he always is, and I do hope the pictures willturn out worthy of this unusual favor from the Queen,who gave me a most attractive picture of herself, inher travelling motor. The Castel Savoia is beautifully situated on oneof the foothills near the entrance to the valley, andcommands a beautiful view of Monte Rosa. Its con-struction is entirely modern; though begun before thetragic death of King Umberto, it has been completedsince, and is the residence of the Queen Mother duringJuly and August of every year. The dear Marchesashowed us all about, and we greatly admired the stair-case in the main hall for its particularly graceful lines.The sun parlor of the Queen is evidently her favorite(i8)

AND COUNTRY SEATS room, for here were glue-pots, colored tissue papers,and endless other things for paper-doll making, as HerMajesty is already busy thinking of the poor childrensChristmas somewhere hereabout. From the windowsthe Marchesa pointed to other buildings belonging tothe Royal domains: a suitable house for extra servants,etc. In the cosy library were many of the best mod-ern English books, as well as French and German, andof course no one can excel the Queens reading knowl-edge of her own language. The castle is fitted withsteam heat, for it is often very cold here, even inAugust. Her Majesty laid the corner-stone in 1899,King Umberto being present, and each year more andmore people come up to this enchanted spot. In 1893the Queen, with her suite, climbed to the elevation offorty-five hundred sixty-one metres, and dedicatedan observatory called the Cabina Margherita, fromwhich valuable and interesting observations have beenmade.
