By the middle of May everythingwas ready for the onset to begin, and thisavalanche of soldiery came rolling down theAsiago plateau, between the Adige and theBrenta. Below them, basking in the sun-shine, stretched the alluring plains of Venetia,with their wealth, their women, and theirwine.
