neighbour by building* The Three Gables next door. The main featureof The Lothians was the studio. The instruc-tions given to the architect were : Mind you, Iwant a large square room—a workshop, and noneof your fal-de-lals and nooks-and-corners andgalleries—nane o yer whigmaleeries and curlie-wurlies, as Andrew Fairservice said. A largeworkshop it became, fifty feet by thirty, dividedfor ordinary use into two square rooms, each withits own fireplace, by a large velvet curtain hangingacross the centre. The nearer room, which wasalways used as the studio proper, had a north light, and the other a large east window. Though therooms were square, there was no lack of comfortand adornment. The eye was drawn at once tosome fine pieces of furniture, old Spanish cabinets, secretaires of Dutch marqueterie, bronze vases,Louis XV. clocks, and well-chosen pieces of oldNankin porcelain. Above the fireplace in theroom where Pettie worked hung a fine panel of THE PALMER(She of original, 22i x 32.)
Text Appearing After Image:
ROYAL ACADEMICIAN 117 old Flemish tapestry, picturing the triumph ofAntony and Cleopatra. On the walls and roundthe room were suits of armour, helmets, Highlandtarges, swords and daggers (from the dirk andthe claymore to the swept-hilted rapier and thefine blade of Andrea Ferrara), pistols and powder-flasks, and sundry pieces of costume. Every-thing was there for use; nearly every objectin the room figured in some picture or another. Petties studio, says Mr. Pinnington, was afaithful reflection, in its freedom from affectation anddisplay, of its unostentatious although lordly occu-pant. Modesty lurked in its semi-tones; ambitionwas felt in its space. The studio was the scene ofmany happy gatherings, when Mr. and Mrs. Pettieinvited their friends to private theatricals or amusical entertainment; and the polished oak floorserved for miany a dance. A stair from the studioled down to a billiard-room and to aproperty-room,containing a fine collection of studies and wellstored with costumes.
