LE ISOLE DELLA LAGUNA 73 guerriera di San Marco. E quanti nobili episodi, quanti esempi eroici nella storia di quest'isola, a cui una commedia famosa ha procurato una fama comica! I Chiozzotti mettono in fuga nel 729 il longobardo Agilulfo; nel secolo seguente restaurano la loro città, distrutta da Pipino per la resistenza opposta all'avanzarsi dell'esercito franco; poi difendono strenuamente la loro indipendenza contro gli Ottoni imperatori, sottomettono gli Adriesi alla Repubblica, respingono i Padovani nella famosa guerra che si combattè nel 1215 intorno alla torre delle Bebbe, nelle lagune di Brondolo, tra Chioggia e Loreo.
