The second agency, hereas elsewhere, was the Christian school. Comparatively fewBulgarians have come to the Protestant chapels to hear thepreaching of the gospel, but many have been glad to sendtheir sons and daughters to the missionary schools. Herethe rising generation has received such Biblical and religiousinstruction as they could get nowhere else. The Collegiate and Theological Institute In the educational work the chief agency has been theCollegiate and Theological Institute, located at Samokov.This city, of 10,000 inhabitants, is situated on a plain 3,600feet above sea level, surrounded by hills and mountains, 35miles south of Sofia, the capital, and 20 miles from the lineof railway running from Constantinople to Vienna. The air,always fresh and pure, is delightfully cool even in summer.

THE BALKAN MISSION 249 and abundant water flows down from the mountains. Thefirst high school for boys, established at Philippopolis from1861 to 1869, was removed to Samokov in 1872, and up tothe present time this city has been the chief educational andliterary center of the Balka,n Mission. Rev. J. F. Clarke wasprincipal of the school until 1878; Rev. J. H. House until1890; Rev. H. C. Haskell until 1898; Rev. Robert Thomsonuntil 1904, and Rev. L. F. Ostrander until now (1915).Owing to the lack of text-books in the Bulgarian languagethe first teachers of the high school prepared books on arith-metic, algebra, geometry, anatomy, physiology, astronomy,and moral philosophy, and a Bulgarian publisher printed thesame. Almost all of these books were introduced into thenational Bulgarian schools. Other school books were after-wards published. In 1880 the name of the school waschanged to the **Collegiate and Theological Institute, andshortly afterwards the curriculum was enlarged to includea
