Description |
English: Lieutenant Rowland Owen, 2 Battalion West Riding Regiment Portrait of Lieutenant Rowland Owen, 2nd Battalion, West Riding Regiment, taken before the First World War. Lt Owen enjoyed a brief celebrity in late 1914 due to a letter written in November while recovering from wounds in hospital at Boulogne. A keen rugby footballer who had played for Yorkshire, he was also captain of the Huddersfield Old Boys Club, to the secretary of which he wrote: "This year was going to be our great year. Well, so it is if we send as many men to the field of battle as we send to the field of play." Published in the local press, Owen's comments inspired a cartoon in a national weekly which became the basis of the recruiting poster 'Will They Never Come?'. Owen was killed at Hill 60 in April 1915. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
