Not yetrecovered fi*om his recent accident, he limps aroundChattanooga, smoking a brier-wood pipe, wearing ablouse and slouched hat. He often rides off to studythe country, taking one or two of his staff with him ;but with no plumed troops, and flying pennons, andgorgeous pageantry of war. But the inexorable will,the fixed purpose to do or die, are all there. Sherman arrived at Chattanooga on the morning ofthe 15th in advance of his column, having reachedBridgeport the night previous.
