eat to the posi-tion shown in Fig. 2. All pressures now being equal, oil will flow bygravity into the steam chest at the same intervals itis seen feeding in the sight-feed glass. The instant the boiler (or forward) pressure becomesgreater than the steam chest pressure, as when theengine throttle is closed, the ball valve in the steamchest plug is forced to its seat, leaving only the smallchoke at the side of the ball seat open, and thus main-taining a balance of pressure in the intake and outletpipes of the lubricator. These steam chest plugsshould always be screwed perpendicularly into thetop of the steam chest. Another special feature of this valve is the arrange-ment whereby oil may be supplied through the auxil-iary oilers (CC, Figs. 1 and 3) without closing thelocomotive throttle, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Another noticeable feature of this lubricator isthe automatic check valves at the top ot each sightfeed glass, as shown in Fig. 1. These valves are 268 LOCOMOTIVE APPLIANCES.
