Summary
[edit]DescriptionLoglands Nature Reserve, Kingston upon Hull (geograph 5582600).jpg |
English: Loglands Nature Reserve, near Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. In the Northern hemisphere, the Garden Snail (Helix aspersa) hibernates October through to April. They often congregate in large numbers on tree trunks, more often than not south-facing, sealed in their shells piled on top of one another. They will often be found where the outer bark is absent, or in crevices. By hibernating in trees, snails are less vulnerable to terrestrial predators. I noted at least 20 trees over a large area being host to varying numbers of snails. |
