ed virility, it ishardly to be expected that they bear hereditaryfactors that would greatly aid in the particularmatter under consideration, because of the warmclimate to which they and their ancestors havebeen habituated. Nevertheless, the experiment is well worthmaking for we know that there are latent quali-ties in the germ plasm of almost every race ofplants that are revealed only through hybridiza-tion, and the presence of which would otherwisebe quite unsuspected. In any event there are differences to be ob-served between individual apricot trees as to therelative hardiness of their blossoms. So materialis at hand, with or without hybridization, fromwhich to begin the work of selection. Doubtless this work might be carried forwardmuch more rapidly if we had a clearer knowledgeas to what the precise anatomical conditions arethat are associated with extreme sensitiveness ofthe blossoms. We know that some blossoms (those of certainJapanese plums, for example) may retain their (250)

But no elaborate studies have been made todetermine whether this difference is associatedwith anatomical differences of structure, theknowledge of which might guide the plantdeveloper. That such differences really exist is suggestedby the observed fact that the leaves of very hardyvarieties of apples, for example those grown inSiberia, have exceptionally deep layers of epi-dermal cells to give protection to the less hardycells that make up the bulk of the leaf. Possiblysome similar modification of the cells may ac-count for the resistant quality of blossoms thatare observed to be able to
