At a few feet from the ground,a rough stone trough receives the water whichis conducted, through the wall, to the outflow byan underground pipe or funnel. Above the out-flow, set in the face of the wall, is a small rectangu-lar panel often fitted with a marble slab bearinga Turkish or Greek inscription on its surface. Whether half hidden in some dark corner orconspicuous by the roadside, these old fountainspossess a quaint interest, and one may readilyappreciate the semi-veneration with which theTurk, in his punctiliousness for ceremonial wash-ing, regards such a monument. Far away inthe uninhabited mountains these beautiful oldmonuments, in the boon they convey to thirstytravellers in a sun-dried wilderness, give a touchof human endeavour, kindliness and even com-panionship. In a few scatteredspots, the water is sulphurous and hot ; thesenaturally form the sites of old Turkish or evenRoman baths. Those of Nigrita, Langaza andSedes near Salonika, are well-known—particularlythose of the last-named which are mentioned byearliest historians. In the villages on the plains, in addition tothe common well or fountain, nearly every house-hold possesses a well of its own, sometimesshallow but occasionally deep, narrow and skil-fully constructed. Surrounded by a platform ofstones and shaded by a large tree, many of themhave copings of marble cut deep in course of timeby the constant friction of ropes.
