der is divided vertically into twoparts, one side containing the air inlet, and the other side the air outletvalve, while ample room is left for the inspection and removal of thevalves and valve seats. The construction of an outlet and an inlet valve is shown in thesections (fig. 121 and 122). The seats are made of a hard mixture of iron,with narrow faces for the valve seats. The valves themselves are machinedout of a solid steel forging in one piece, while at the outer ends there arecapacious dash pots. The Valve Gear.—Bearing in mind that there can never be anyobstruction to the full opening of the valves, and that this gear only closesthem, an inspection of fig. 119 shows the extreme simplicity of the meansemployed to effect this operation.
