our,richly ornamented down the feams with gorget and ikirt of mail, and a lion athis feet; on his furcoat are his arms, a fefle between three calves, and underhis head his creft, a calfs head iflfuing from a ducal coronet: his helmet ispointed, and ornamented with a rich bandeau of jewels, his hands are joinedin prayer. This is the monument of the celebrated Sir Hugh Calveley, whodiftinguiflied himfelf greatly in the French, wars during the reigns of King Edwardthe Third, and Richard the Second; he died in the year 1394 : the arms abovealluded to, as painted on this monument, have been thofe of Calveley ; argent, afeflTe gules, between three calves paflant fable; and gules on a chevron-argent, threerofes of the field (borne by Browe and Knolles) placed alternately ; they are muchdefaced, and only the feife remains of the one, and the chevron of the other.
