When we leftMr. Spalding, husband rode an Indian horse, which he hadnever mounted before, and found him a hard rider in everygait, except a gallop; and slow in his movements, nor couldhe pace, as mine did, so for the last six days we have gallopedmost of the way, where the ground would admit of it. September 1st, 1836. You can better imagine our feelingsthis morning than we can describe them. I could not realizethat the end of our long journey was so near. We arose assoon as it was light, took a cup of coffee, ate of the duck wehad given us last night, and dressed for Walla Walla. Westarted while it was yet early, for all were in haste to reachthe desired haven. Across the Continent 83 the whole of the way to the Fort. The first appearance wesaw of civilization was the garden, two miles this side of theFort. The fatigues of the long journey seemed to be forgottenin the excitement of being so near the close. Soon the Fort ap-peared in sight, and when it was announced that we were near,Mr. McLeod, Mr. Pambrun, the gentleman of the house, and Mr.Townsend (a traveling naturalist), sallied forth to meet us.After the usual introduction and salutation, we entered theFort and were comfortably situated in cushioned arm chairs.They were just eating breakfast as we rode up, and soon wewere seated at the table, and treated to fresh salmon, potatoes,tea, bread and butter. What a variety, thought I. You can-not imagine what an appetite these rides in the mountains givea person. I wish some of the feeble ones in the States couldhave rode over the mountains; they would have said, like me,that victuals, even the plainest kinds, never relished so wellbefore. A
