DRILLING-MACHIJSES, METAL. 187 cards were taken from an apparatus, a.s shown in Fig. 6, consisting of a cylinder of cast-iron,witii flange at the base, and bored out to receive a plunger. The area of this cylinder was 10sq. in. Near the bottom of the plunger three grooves ^\- in. deep were cut, and about -^ in.apart, in order to i)revent leakage of oil, which was placed in the cylinder below the plunger.Communication witii oil was then made to a steam-gauge on one side and an indicator onthe other, as shown. The details taken are shown in the subjoined table, by means of whichan accurate calculation may be made at any time as to capacity and time required to do agiven piece of work with a given speed of drill: Diameter of Depth of holedrilled.
