f King John, and married to Llewellin ap Jorwerth, who was Prince of Wales in 1105. Like that of Richard the Third at Leicester, it had been used as a watering-trough for cattle. Having originally been deposited in the monastery of Llanvaes, it was afterwards lost for nearly three centuries, and then discovered by Mr. R. Llwyd, when Lord Bulkeley caused it to be removed to its present situation. Near Baron Hill is the residence of Captain Lewis Hampton, who has an interesting collection of curiosities, which may be seen by persons of respectability; and nearer to the water we passed the seat of Lady Williams.About a mile from Beaumaris, is the Abbey of Llanvaes, founded by Llewellin ap Jorwerth; and two miles north of it is Penmon Priory, which was re-endowed by the same prince. Five miles north of Beaumaris, and a mile from the shore, stands Priestholme, or Puffin Island, already mentioned.It is a mile long, and half a mile broad, in an oval form. The remains of a square tower still exist upon the island, and there is a house for the man who watches the signal staff, forming part of the telegraphic communication between Liverpool and Holyhead. In the summer, this place is visited by myriads of waterfowl, more especially by the puffins, which appear at the end of April, and re-emigrate in August, laying one egg only. This bird is about the size of a pigeon, with a flat bill of extraordinary size. Upon their arrival they either themselves burrow in the ground, or dis-possess the poor rabbit of his abode, for the pur-pose of breeding.
