It was difficult to ascer-tain with certainty the causes of thisdegradation; but it was not to bedoubted that, if true, it was in somemode connected with the presence ofour ships at Napha, and probably resulted from the admission of the Com-modore and his suite into the royal residence at Shui. It was not a pleasantreflection to the officers that they should have been, however innocently, thecause of the poor old mans degradation; and it seemed hard to understandwhy their visit should have led to more serious consequences than thoseproduced by that of the officers of H. B. M. ship Sphynx to the same place.At first, it was rumored that the old regent had been obliged to perform thehara-Jciri, or disembowelling operation; but the painful feelings producedby this intelligence were happily relieved by the sight of the old man in hishouse at Shui, by two of the officers of the Susquehanna.
