In a few moments I was informed. As fastas she peeled the fruit she nonchalantly tossed it intoher mouth, keeping up a continuous chewing, while out ofthe northeast corner of her mouth flowed a steady streamof seeds (which were rejected), and from the south-west corner came the jam, which was caught in her fin-gers, thrown into the boiling pot and thus cooked. I had asked that we be taken up by the Old Trail — the one used by the Zunis when theylived on the summit of Tai-yo-al-la-ne. At first he saidit was impossible. The storms of the centuries hadwashed it out so that it was impracticable. Can you go up it? I asked. Yes, was the reply. Then, said I, well go too. But we took along several stout ropes, to aid in caseof emergency, and it was well that we did. We came toplaces where all traces of the trail were gone. At otherswe had to be hoisted up by sheer strength, the Indianshaving scaled the cliffs and the three of them findingit pretty hard work to drag us up to their level. On thesummit we found the ruins of the homes, occupied by therebellious Zunis, after 1680, and there Tsnahey took usto the shrine we had come especially to see.
