His father was aPresbyterian clergyman and both of his parents were of oldNew England stock, the Fisk family having settled inMassachusetts in 1637. His early boyhood was spent onthe shores of Lake Chami)lain, at Essex, N. Y.; afterwardsthe family removed to Canada. Mr. Fisk received an e.xcellentcommon school and academic education. At the early age offifteen he was an instructor in French in Bakersfield Acad-emy, thus paying by his services for tuition in other branches.At seventeen years of age we find him ajiprenticed to amerchant in Trenton, New Jersey ; a few years later hesecured a position in the Mechanics Bank of New YorkCity, and when the Bank of the Commonwealth wasorganized he became paying teller in that institution. In1862 Mr. Fisk started business on his own account inpartnership with Mr. A.
