Iwas beginning to get irritated at my utter helpless-ness in this stream, scarcely more than six feet wide,or more than five feet deep, when a shallow placegave my spiked sandal a point of application for aspring against the steep bank, up which I scrambled,and ran to help Maigaard, who was barely able tohold the half-submerged sledges against the current. The furrows and crevasses increased in numberand width as we neared the land. After the sunrose from its short dip below the horizon, we forgoteverything in the splendour of the morning.
