The Association Track and Field Championships wTere held at UlmerPark on Saturday, June 27. and were as .veil contested a set of events asany that have taken place in the Metropolitan District for some time.About 200 members competed and the rest in company with friends satin the stand or around the field, cheering and rooting for the variousfavorites. It may have been due to the poor condition of the track that manyof the aforesaid favorites failed to annex events they were popularlysupposed to have had at their mercy ; or it may have been that theyunderestimated their competitors ; at any rate most of the prizes went todark horses, and everybody was satisfied, especially the young menwho had entered with no special hope or expectation and came out witha Protective medal. The big surprise of the day was the winning of the point trophy bythe Castleton Athletic Association of Staten Island, from Second Signal

This question was in doubt up tothe very last moment, when a Castleton member landed his club twopoints in the lead by taking a place in the broad jump, thereby nettingenough points to win the trophy. Taken in all, the games were a success and came up to expectationsin most particulars. iMuch to the regret of the members, the customary AssociationDinner did not come off last season, and its absence left a yawningvacancy (no allusion to digestive apparatus intended) for which it washard to find any acceptable suhstitute. However, the final gathering ofthe clans took place at the Firemens Memorial Benefit, and as every-body made it his or her special business to be there, the spaciousgymnasium, which the public-spirited Dr. Watson L. Savage placed atthe Associations disposal for that evening, was crowded to its utmostcapacity. It really looked like the championships all over again whenthe giant Seventeenths put
