Society of Cin-cinnati, officially changed the name of the settlement to its presentname. In the summer or fall of 1790 Ziegler joined Harmar at FortWashington, and in September of that year he accompaniedHarmar in the expedition against the Indian villages near thepresent city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and which ended in a retreatto Fort Washington. The real object of the campaign was, how-ever, accomplished by a party of six hundred militia under Col-onel Hardin including fifty regulars under command of CaptainZiegler. They burned the deserted Indian villages and destroyedcorn, provisions, and all the property of the Indians. After dis-banding his army Harmar resigned his commission and demand-ed a court of inquiry at which Captain Ziegler was one of theprincipal witnesses, and attributed the defeat to the insubordina-tion of the militia. Governor St. Clair wrote from Marietta,Nov. 26th, 1790, to the Secretary of War, I got to this place 152 Ohio Arch, and Hist. Socictv Publications.

The conse-quence is that provisions must be obtained from the inhabitants;but what can an infant settlement like this supply? St. Clair hoped that there would be soon received from theIndians an humble supplication for peace, but in this St.Clair and the President were doomed to disappointment. Theinfluence of the British and the effort of Brant to establish aconfederacy restrained the Indians and led them to believe itpossible to drive the whites back across the Ohio. The savagesintoxicated with joy over their victory began to swarm all overthe settlements on the Ohio, carrying death and destruction withthem.
