d this house byway of exchange from Cuthbert Tonstall, the bishopwhose name is so well known in English history.It is to be hoped that in this case the exchange was really not a robbery. Durham House, afterit passed out of the hands of the Church into thoseof royalty, became celebrated as a gay scene ofchivalric entertainment on many occasions. Inthe year 1540, for example, as Stow informs us, amagnificent tournament was held at Westminster. and Sir George Carew, Knights, and AnthonyKingston and Richard Cromwell, Esquires. Theold chronicler then gives a vivid picture of thetournament in detail, and adds, That day, afterthe jousts performed, the challengers rode intoDurham House, where they kept open household,and feasted the king and queen, with their ladiesand all the court.
