Manyyears before her husband had died and had left her withseveral small children. But she was a rustler, huntedgame, and even trapped bears. There was not a familyin the tribe that was better provided for than hers,*said Fox. This account greatly raised the old lady inmy estimation. What a life she must have led in thewilderness, and what a story her experiences would makeif one could only know them ! Cold, hunger, privations,adventures with wild animals, struggles to find the where-withal to feed hungry mouths and clothe naked backswould all find a place therein. How interesting wouldbe the single matter of her view of the white man andthe experiences of herself and people with the membersof that race. All the party were physicallygood specimens, for they had never had much experiencewith fire-water and the white mans diseases. Theirbearing was utterly different from that of Indians onemeets close to civilization. It was evident that theystill regarded themselves as lords of the land, and us asfriendly travellers therein. Soon after leaving this interesting camp we reachedthe mouth of Fox River, and had great difficulty in pass-ing it, as the stream dashes into the Finlay with greatviolence, and creates a dangerous eddy near the oppositebank. The Fox follows the west side of the GreatIntermontane Valley, and contains so many rapids andlow falls that it is not
