ith our sundry straps, twine, rope, andtwisted gauze! Finally I nailed on two transversepieces to keep the logs from weaving back and forth.The great trouble was the weakness of the lashingsand the shortness of the nails. Finally I cut two dryspruce poles, while Joe made some wonderful paddles,or sweeps, by nailing slabs of wood to some shorterpoles. It was after three oclock in the afternoon beforethe good craft Necessity was launched and our belong-ings placed upon it, well wrapped in the balloon-silktent. It hardly seemed possible that we could reachour canoe and cache before night fell, but the attractionof the jam was irresistible, and after I had taken twopictures we pushed off.
