The club-house is per-manently situated on the river Adyar, about fivemiles out of the city of Madras ; but during thecold weather, when the principal regatta is held,a large tank, called the Long Tank, oppositethe Cathedral of Madras, fills and gives a stretchof water 3 miles by 2 miles. A temporary boat-house is erected there while the water lasts, andthe big regatta is generally held in this tank.The roads leading to the club are shaded bymagnificent avenues, the drive being one of thebest in Madras.Fleet. The fleet numbers about fifty craft, and com-prises racing fours, pairs, double sculls and skiffs,together with the usual pleasure boats in theshape of tubs, canoes and whiffs, while there areseveral small sailing-boats, chiefly canoes. Atthe big regattas, should there be visiting crews,the fours are rowed over a mile course, and thepairs and sculls over three-quarter mile. Thesenior club events are rowed over three-quartermile and the junior events over half mile. The

ROWING AND BOATING 533 course is straight, with a depth ranging from 6 to12 ft. During the hot weather, regattas are held Regattas,on the Adyar, the three-quarter-mile course beingfrom The Palms to The Mound, and thehalf-mile course from The Lock in ; the coursehas one bend, and the water is shallower than inthe Long Tank. The hot-weather regatta is heldin August, and the cold - weather regatta inJanuary, while pleasure-boating on the Adyargoes on throughout the year. The club has nospecial cups, but the Challenge Fours, Pairs andSculls at the cold-weather regatta are open to allrecognised boat clubs in India and the East, andcups are given to members of the winningcrews. 3. The Poona Royal Connaught Boat Club. This club, originally called the Poona BoatClub, started in rather a small way in 1868, andin 1889 linked up with itself the Kirkee BoatClub, the amalgamation being styled as above.It has an average membership of 170, admissionis by ballot; the usually recognised class ofgentle
