zoowel aande binnen- als aan de buitenzijde der poort, tegen de omwalling eenpaar kleine huisjes aangebouwd, een enkele maal ook werd bovenden zwaar overwelfden doorgang een meer of min sierlijke bovenbouwgeplaatst; op die wijze was o. m. de in 1623 gebouwde A-poort teGroningen, en is nog de bestaande, in 1577 gebouwde, buitenOosterpoort te Hoorn ), evenals de A-poort te Groningen van eenklokketorentje voorzien. Eigenaardig ook is in die poort het gebogen beloop van haarlengte-as, en in nog sterkere mate had dit de Brusselsche poort teMaastricht. Sedert de XVde eeuw toch was men reeds gewoon,om de lengte-as eener poort niet te plaatsen in het verlengde van deas der straat welke zij afsloot, maar deze daarmede een ietwat stompen l) Aan de binnenzijde dier Oosterpoort stond in t Latijn dit opschrift:„Niets baat de waakzaamheid der wachters, niets helpen wapenen en groote tinnen der muren en de donders van het raauwe kanon, indien Gij, o God! deze Stad niet wilt regeren en beschermen.

Zoo ontnam de stad Zwolle haarRhoenpoort, op het plan dier stad van 1582 (afb. N°. 16), aan dehouthaven tegenover die Krane gelegen, haar defensief en middel-eeuwsch karakter, door haar in het begin der XVIIde eeuw te voor-zien van een omgaand dak met open balustrade en pinakels op dehoeken, zie afb.
