The piratesof the Spanish Main and the Southerncoasts of this country have enjoyed almosta monopoly of popular interest in fact andfiction. As early as 1632, however, theNew England coast was plagued by pirates,and the doughty merchant seamen ofSalem and other ports were sallying forthto fight them for a hundred years on end.In 1670, the General Court published inBoston, by beat of drum, a proclama- tion against a ship at the Isle of Shoalssuspected of being a pirate, and three yearslater another official broadside was hurledagainst piracy and mutiny. The reportof an expedition sent out from Boston in1689 in the sloop Mary, against notoriouspirates named Thomas Hawkins andThomas Pound, has all the dramatic prop-erties of a tale of pure adventure.
