Text Appearing Before Image:
it was decided that Kudlarand one other should go inland and huntfor deer, while I, with the remainder ofthe Eskimos, continued on the ice tolook for bear. An equal division wasmade of biscuits, sugar, and tea, andthrough Sipsus generosity a quantity ofdeer meat was added to our supplies. Long before daylight Sipsu, Teddy-linguah, and Tukshu turned southwardwith heavily loaded sledges, while ourparty headed northward, the two deerhunters leaving us at Brooks Island. We who were after bear skirted theHand, then headed west off the frontof Humboldt Glacier, picking our waythrough rough ice between the icebergs. After a few hours of hard work, beartracks were sighted. We gave chase, but they soon turned into rafted, brokenice so rough that further progress in thatdirection with the sledges was impos-sible, and we were forced to turn back.Presently on a large pan of smooth icewe came on the tracks of a number ofbears, but all were so old that the dogsfailed to catch the scent, until at dusk
Text Appearing After Image:
598 THE OUTING MAGAZINE we fell again upon a fresh trail. Herethe animals took the scent and were offon a dead run. It was highly exciting. Not a sound broke the silence save thepanting of the dogs and the occasionalbump of the sledges over small lumpsof ice. Ilabradou and his dogs, not far be-hind, was quite invisible through thecloud of steam that rose from the bodiesof the heated dogs; I could not makethem out, in fact, until they drew closealongside Oxpuddyshou. Every mo-ment now I hoped for a shot at the bear, but disappointment came again. Sud-denly the trail, like the other one wehad followed, turned into rough ice, andthickening darkness compelled us to re-linquish the chase. Here we camped. The Eskimos, fearing that they might be attacked bythe bear as they slept, placed their riflesalongside their sleeping bags with elab-orate preparation for defense. As formyself, the nights prospect was miser-able. My feet and hands were alreadynumb with cold, and my sleeping bag,at best too
