OF THE HEAD AND SHOULDERIN THE COLD, WHITE SNOW . . . THE TOE IS LIABLE TO RUN UN-DER THE SURFACE, ESPECIALLY IFTHERE IS A LITTLE CRUST, TRIPPINGYOU AND THROWING YOU FORWARD My first intimate acquaintance withsnowshoes was made in an April sugarbush, with a sap yoke across my shoul-ders and a brimming pail of the sweetliquid in either hand for ballast, whichincidentally acted as an incentive andspurred me to my best work to avoid thecertain deluge that followed a badtumble. HOW TO SNOWSHOE 409 smooth fields for the first hours prac-tice. Once you get in the woods you areliable to encounter obstacles. Logs, fall-en trees, rocks, and such obstructions asappear above the surface may be negoti-ated, but there are always a certainamount of little stubs and bushes justunderneath that catch in the webbing ortip the shoe to one side and let that downa couple of feet with a sudden drop. One will naturally throw out the otherfoot to catch the balance, forgetting thatshoe, and there is almost no end to thetangle one finds himself in. Watch the Turns One of the most sudden tumbles youwill get, however, will be when you for-get yourself and step backwards. Whenmaking a turn one has to be careful notto let the tail of the inside shoe swingover on to the other, or there will betrouble when the other foot is started. In traveling through the thick, smallgrowth woods you will find it difficult tohandle the long shoes. The long tailsare fouling every tree you pass or tan-gl
