ter Church, Memphis, was handicapped in hiswork by lack of teachers, he asked the Very Rev. M.OBrien, provincial of St. Joseph Province, tosend him a colony of Dominican nuns. It will be re-membered that the provincial, at that time, had juris-diction over all the Sisters of Saint Dominic in theUnited States. Six sisters were withdrawn from theKentucky and Ohio communities for the southernfoundation; Sister Lucy Harper, Sister Ann Simpsonand Sister Vincentia Fitzpatrick from Saint MaryMagdalen Convent, and Sister Magdalen Clarke, Sis-ter Emily Thorpe and Sister Catharine McCormackfrom Saint Mary Convent. Accompanied by the Rev.Francis Cubero, they reached Memphis, by boat, atmidnight on January 1, 1851. Father Grace had justreturned from a sick call, and when again roused, hew^as greatly surprised to find that his late visitantswere the sisters he was expecting. DEVErX)PMENT OF THE SOCIETY 85 was a neat, two-story house containing eight roomsand a garret, which had formerly been the residenceof General Coe. The first house of the sisters in Tennessee wasplaced under the protection of Saint Agnes. Theyopened their school in February. The little commu-nity had to meet the trials of poverty which in somedegree confront every religious beginning; but thesetrials were patiently borne and finally overcome. Thewhite-robed sisters soon found themselves estab-lished in the esteem and affection of the generoussouthern people, and Saint Agnes Academy was wellpatronized. The following year, 1852, it received itscharter from the state of Tennessee and it was soondrawing pupils from adjoining states, while increas-ing the number from its own. In June, 1853, SaintAgnes graduated its first students. They were MissMary Doyle of Arkansas and Miss Rabb of Missis-sippi.
