It was felt that if a communityof Dominican Sisters could be secured for the latelyacquired property, the desired object would be at-tained, and religious education re-begun in the ma-jestic pile which had been the pride of the town, butw^hose silent corridors and untenanted rooms werenow its reproach. In response to the offer made by Father Mc-Donald and his fellow citizens. Mother Magdalenvisited Hastings in the spring of 1909. While wellaware that the opening of a school of this charactermeant a heavy drain on the community, and addi-tional debt, since the building would have to bemodernized, still she saw its future possibilities inthe substantial and growing locality. To the greatjoy of the people, she decided to accept the property,and started preparations for the opening of classesin September.

The academy at Hastingsmade the first demand upon the attention of MotherAquin. She pushed ahead the work, and on August9, 1909, sent a carefully selected band of sisters toopen the new foundation. It was composed of Sis-ter M. Louis Logsdon, superior, Sister M. Pius Fitz-patrick, Sister Aloysius OConnor, Sister TeresaWebb, grandniece of Hon. Benjamin F. Webb, cele-brated Catholic historian of Kentucky; Sister Mar-garet Hamilton, Sister Louis Bertrand Lancaster,Sister Rose McCarthy, and Sister Anastasia Gorney.It is doubtful if any foundation of the Order everreceived a more sincere and general welcome thanthat accorded the sisters by the people of Hastings.They were solicitous for the comfort of the nuns andzealous for the success of their undertaking.
