Ill cerned an important -public duty had been performed. Performed itcertainly was^ but not in a manner satisfactory to the people of Kaskaskiaand vicinity. The funds provided by the act in question have not provedto be sufficient to keep these new Catholic and Protestant cemeteries inproper condition. The fences are out of repair and the growth of bushesand thorny vines is altogether beyond control. The soil and even thesubsoil washes down hill^ leaving graves exposed and the condition ofthe cemetery is a disgrace to the State. No complaints are made by themembers of the parish who appear to have inherited the patience oftheir ancestors whose good will during and after the Eevolution has welldeserved the praise of all our historians, but I feel it my duty to callattention to the States neglect of this sacred place. There is no harm in mentioning here that it was impossible toremove in any satisfactory manner, the sacred remains of the pioneerswho were buried in the old cemeteries. Th
