We are strangers here, you know, explained Bill. Wehave figured that it must be a quay or a dock or some-thing, but we couldnt make out why you are using a caisson.That is a caisson out there between the barges, isnt it? Yes, answered the man, and its afloat. Thats thereason we have the barges at each side, so as to keep it fromupsetting. But arent you going to sink it? *0h, no. We are using it as a sort of diving bell. Yousee our quay is to be built on piles driven into the river-bottom. The piles have already been driven fifteen feetbelow water level. How do you drive piles below water level? interruptedBill. We use a pile-driver down to the water line, and then weput a follower (a short piece of a pile) on it and drive it downto the required depth. The piles have all been driven andnow
