^ I 9 I POMPEIANA. 231 PLATE LXI. An architectural subject, with a pyrgos. PLATE LXII. View of a temple, discovered 1817. It is placedwithin an enclosure, about 58 feet square; thewall of which is formed in brick-work, to receivea stucco exterior. Steps , at the rear, led upto the adytum, or cell, placed upon a podium,9 feet high; and within is the pedestal for thestatue. The altar, the only part perfect, is ofwhite marble, the whole about 4 feet 6 incheshigh: some have imagined the sculpture upon itto represent Cicero sacrificing, from a supposedjesemblance in the principal figure to that greatorator. The victim is led by the popa, naked tothe waist, with his malleus and tucked-up clothes.The sacrificator is a magistrate, or augustal,with his lictors and fasces; a boy follows, withthe simpulum, patera, and sacred vitta.
