Mr. James Bruce has a drove of Shetlandponies at Inverquhomery, Longside, Aber-deenshire. These are descended from twomares and a stallion imported in the year 86 1889- Three years ago Mr. Bruce re-plenished his breeding stock by the purchaseof five more mares. A noteworthy featureof this stud is the colour, which in everycase is chestnut, Mr. Bruces 1889 im-portations being of that rare colour amongShelties. Since the establishment of the ShetlandPony Stud Book, several studs have beenfounded in Scotland and England. The chiefdifficulty the owners have to contend withis the proneness towards increase of sizedue to milder climate and richer feed. 87 USES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THEPONY. It would be difficult to name a class ofwork in which the pony is not employed.He is used by all, from the sovereign to thepeasant and costermonger. Pony racing hasbeen recently re-established as a sport aftertemporary suspension, due to no shortcomingon the ponys side. It is rare that a meetof hounds is not attended by a sprinklingof ponies carrying future sportsmen andwomen, and it is safe to assert that everymaster of hounds and every man who takeshis own line across country served hisapprenticeship to the saddle on the backof a pony. The reason is that few menwho do not learn to ride in early boyhood,when a pony is the only possible mount,completely master the art in later life ; hencewe meet few good horsemen who do notreceive their first riding lessons on a steadypony.
