Description
Urn with cover, Porcelain jar decorated in underglaze cobalt blueQing dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722)The cobalt on this jar and lid is a clear, bright blue typical of the best Kangxi period porcelains. Its decoration shows a pair of fenghuang birds, sometimes called “Chinese phoenix”, though their symbolism is quite different than phoenixes in the West. In China, the male bird feng and the female huang reign over all other birds, and represent high virtue and grace, as well as the union of yin and yang. Round the neck of the jar is a band showing bamboo, and beside the birds and on the lid are wutong trees, the only tree that phoenixes will alight on; the wutong is yin, whereas bamboo is yang. Beneath the birds are peonies growing out of rocks, flowers symbolising wealth, distinction, love, affection and feminine beauty.
