Respecting them Mr. Tegetmeier in his Poultry Bookremarks :—*• In form Silk fowls are compact, and low on thelegs ; in this respect resembling well-bred Cochins. Theyare by no means ofso great a weight as they appear, fortheir feathers when in good condition are very fluffy, andstand well out from the body, giving them the appearanceof far greater bulk than they in reality possesi=!. Theirordinary weight is under two pounds each for the hens, andtwo pounds and a half for the cocks. From their small sizethey are not unfrequently termed silky bantams, and areoften exhibited at our poultry shows in the classes for thosebreeds. The eggs laid by silk fowls are small in size, andof a pale buff colour. The hens usually lay about twentyor twenty-five eggs before showing any desire to sit; theyare admirable mothers, and, on this account, as well as fromthe warmth afforded by their downy plumage, they are wellsuited for rearing pheasants or partridges.

Considerable attention has been of late devoted to thesubject of cross-bred fowls, and the real value of crossing,as well as the lines upon which it should go, have at last beenagreed upon. The ordinary cross-bred poultry, such as wesee on too many farms, are simply mongrels, crossed andre-crossed; but we do not mean these at all. When w^e saycross-bred, we must be understood to refer to a cross betweentwo pure breeds, by which definite characteristics are to beobtained.
