This Inauguration was said to be, by persons who hadseen many, one of the most impressive ceremonies that everopened the administration of a President. The oath ofoffice is usually administered and the Inaugural address de-livered from a large platform erected in front of the Capi-tol before which ten thousand people can assemble. Butthe ten thousand people are sure to have been waiting ina massed crowd for an hour or more; they are always tiredand uncomfortable, so when they finally discover that fewof them can really hear anything, and that they have seenall there is to be seen, they begin to move about and talk,the noise and agitation greatly detracting from the impres-siveness of the ceremony. Because my husbands Inaugura-tion took place in the Senate Chamber it was no less inthe sight of all the people. There was room on the floor 330

It was a great presence; and the taking of the oath andthe delivering of the Inaugural address before assemblednational authority and the worlds representatives, in a sol-emn silence in which every word could be heard, left a deepimpression.
