^ Ki N :^0 STUDIES AND PORTRAITS 261 probably dates from about 1650. The goddess wears a helmet withan owl for crest, and grasps a shield. But for the working up ofthe impasto, and the harmonious intonations so characteristic ofRembrandt, the beauty and noble proportions of the figure mightwell lead us to suppose it the creation of some Italian masfer.Unhappily the picture has suffered considerably; the buckler, whichfills the lower part of the canvas, has become quite black. A portrait,or rather a study, painted about 164S-1650, claims a place of honouramong the works of this period. This is the life-size three-quarterslength of an old woman, bought by M. Sedelmeyer in Scotland,and now in M.J. Porgescollection in Paris. Alarge Bible lies upon herlap ; her left hand restsupon it. holding herspectacles. She seemsto be musing on whatshe has just read.
