Robert Adam and his BrothersTheir Lives, Work, & Influence INTRODUCTORY NOTE. THE CLASSIC INFLUENCE ON ENGLISH ARCHI-TECTURE AND FURNITURE UP TO THE TIMEOF THE BROTHERS ADAM. The story of the lives and work of Robert Adam and his brothersforms a significant episode in the history of English Renaissancearchitecture. The character of their work is distinctive, and con-sequently easily recognisable, so that it has come to be popularlydescribed as the Adam style. The delicacy and refinement of Adam interior decorations are somarked, and the work has such individual charm, that it has alwaysevoked interest and admiration, and has exercised a definite and oflate an increasing influence on the trend of English architectural art.Typical examples are shown in Figs. 1-3 and throughout the book. It seems advisable, before studying the actual work of thebrothers Adam, to consider very briefly the course of Renaissanceinfluence in England which led up to it, in order to appreciate thepart they
