Francis Gaftrellshoufe, in 1759; that being the houfe to which 276 New Place, which a modern front is reprefentedto have been added; the original ftrudtureof Sir Hugh Clopton being encafed withinit, juft as the monaftic Zion Houfe isenclofed within that ponderous ducalpile on the banks of the Thames, whichlooks like a Union outfide, and isdecorated as an Italian Villa infide.Thoufands of perfons have mourned Mr.Gaftreirs deftrudtivenefs, caring nothingfor the modern front, but grievingover the antique interior, where Shake-fpere was fuppofed to have lived and died.It is defirable that the public fhould befet right concerning this miftake, andunderftand, that, about the year 1720, oneSir Hugh Clopton utterly demolifhed thefabric which another Sir Hugh Clopton,about the year 1490, had erected. They only need to be examined,and the eye learns inftantly that a com-plete rebuilding, and not a modernfronting, muft have occurred in orabout 1720. Upon the ground-floor the hall dooroccupied the centre, flanked right andleft with three windows. On the firft-floor a row of feven win-dows were difplayed, the central oneopening into a fmall balcony.
