bot (brother of theChancellor Talbot), fold it to theRev. Francis Gaftrell, 1753. 12th. Gaftrell deftroyed the modernhoufe, and razed it to the ground,in 1759. 13th. 22 New Place, 13th. The fubfequent hiftory of NewPlace—1775 to 1862—may be toldin a few words. Mrs. Gaftrell foldthe property to W. Hunt,* Efq., ofStratford, in 1775. 14th. The truftees under the will of W.Hunt, on the 29th Sept., 1790, foldto Charles Henry Hunt,f* Efq., whofubfequently purchafed of FannyMortiboys, ipinfter, the adjoininghoufe, now known as Names Houfe. + 15 th. The affignees of C. H. Hunt, onthe 15 th May, 1807, conveyed thewhole of the property defcribed upon * Grandfather of W. O. Hunt, Efq., the prefentTown-clerk of Stratford. He was a promoter of theJubilee of 1769. Garrick correfponded with him. f The fecond fon of the aforefaid W. Hunt. % It is only during the prefent year that it has beenafcertained that this houfe belonged to Thomas Naihe,who married Shakefperes grand-daughter, ElizabethHall.

In January, 1829, the heir-at-lawof E. Batterfhee, and the affignees ofW. G. Morris, fold off the propertyin lots, A—including Names houfe, was pur-chafed by Mifs Lucy Smith. B—the Cottages formed out of Shake-fperes Barn, were purchafed, the oneby Michael Prentice, the other byThomas Webb. C—the Great Garden (now a BowlingGreen), including the ground nowoccupied by the Theatre, was pur-chafed by Edward Ley ton. D—is a ftrip of land which formerlybelonged to the Clifford Charity, and was 24 New Place, was acquired by an exchange effectedby Mr. Gaftrell. It never belongedto the Great Garden in Shakefperestime, though it has continued a partof it fince Mr. Gaftrell acquired it. E—is a ftrip of Garden at the back ofNames houfe, which always belongedto Names houfe until 1790, when itwas purchafed by C. H. Hu
