NO one would have dared claim for Denver,a quarter of a century ago, the proudposition that it holds at this time. Then it wasa mere village, without wealth, without influence,remote, and unsightly. Now it is a metropolis,a centre of refinement, a place rich in itself, andthe admiration of all beholders. More thankeeping pace with the phenomenal growth ofa region that is still in its infancy, so far as•development is concerned, it has lost no oppor-tunity and neglected no chance. Active, keenlyalive, progressive, and vigorous, it has turned toits own account the fortunes of the State ofwhich it is the capital, and has secured by everymeans in its power the reputation it to-day en-joys. Like a romance is the story of Coloradosgrowth, and not less so is that of the growth ofDenver. We miss finding in its history thefanciful doings of Spanish adventurer and piouspadre. No fierce wars were ever waged forits possession, no glittering pageants were everheld in the long wide streets, with their vista ofmountains and plains.
