pone the pleasureof expressing to you all the feelings of gratitudewith which my heart is filled until I return fromRandan. I have no time to say more for I amvery hurried and just about to start. I will onlybeg you to tell Mme. de Feucheres from me howgrateful I am for all she has done in the matterand how I long to be able to tell her all I. feeltowards her. Be assured. Monsieur, that these words comefrom the heart; let me repeat my protestationsof sincere and true friendship ; I remain for lifeyour devoted ... Mme. Adelaide also sent a letter of gratitudeto the duke for the kind interest which he hadtaken in the little due dAumale. His replyreads as follows :— * Chantilly, September i6th, 1829.* Mademoiselle, I am very grateful for all thekind things which you say concerning my devisein favour of our dear little godson. No one isbetter able than I am to appreciate the amiablequalities which he already possesses and which, I donot doubt, will afford his parents much happiness. 124

5 > Family Scenes I will say no more, Mademoiselle, for this sub-ject always awakens painful memories in mywounded heart. I will therefore content myselfwith repeating in this letter the assurance ofmy affectionate attachment and the very sincerefriendship with which I am for life your devoted, L. H. J. DE Bourbon. * P.S.—Mme. de Feucheres is very grateful forthe interest which you kindly express for herand begs me to present her respectful complimentsto you. Sophie was now almost certain of obtaining herwish ; nevertheless it was not until the followingyear that she was admitted to court. She beganto throw off her mask and to show herself in hertrue colours. The dukes life was becoming unbearable tohim; family scenes were more frequent thanever; on such occasions, Sophie used to call herslave every name she could think of, slam the doorin his face and then lock herself in her own room—an unnecessary proceeding, as the duke avoidedher whenever it was possible for him to do so.
