\ ol wild animals for food and clothing, and they sawno need of changing. Mr. Morstad endeavored to learn theIndian language, and suceeded in getting three or four chil-dren into the school; but seeing little success, he resigned inthe fall ol 1886. The children were brought into the HommeOrphans Home. In the meantime a suitable building badbeen erected near the village of Wittenberg, and 80 acresof land purchased bv the committee before mentioned. Mean-while the matter of beginning an Indian Mission had beentaken up by the Norwegian Svnod. and the property was nowdeeded over to said svnod. Rev. T. Larson was called as thefirst superintendent, moving from Harmony, Minn., to Wit-tenberg in July. 1887. where the building was dedicated andcalled Bethany. This was on July 1th. and eight childrenwere then at school. In ihe winter of 1888, Axel Jacobson was called as teacherand assistant to Superintendent Larson. Meanwhile we dis-covered that we had other tribes, more accessible and easierto interest in educational matters, namely, the Oneidas.Slockbridges, Brolhertowns, Menominees. and Chippewas,some 20 to -10 miles distant from the station. Soon wesucceeded in getting children from the-e tribe- entered in ourschool, and our Winnebagoes, for whom we were especiallysolicitous, became a little more accessible. We received support from the government to the extentof a certain amount until 1895, when all contracts with churchschools were abrogated. Finding that our school could not be supported whollyby donations on account of the attendance having increased,and receiving a proposition from the government to buy ourMission, the synod decided to sell the same to the govern-ment, which was done in 1900.
